bloom where planted...?


one might expect that these two potted plants (both containing purple basil) might have gotten different treatment to cause them to thrive in one case, and whither and die in the other - but that would be a false conclusion as they were both on the same deck, had the same potting soil, were both in full sun and watered at the same time
additionally crazy, is the fact that the single plant is the one that didn't survive, while the crowded pot (starting from seeds planted and never thinned out or separated) is the one that struggled through an unbearably hot july and drought-like conditions that forced each young plant to compete with the others for the same sources of nourishment

therefore, i shall conclude that i am hugely drawn to this deep purple version of one of my favorite herbes in part because it, like me, seems to thrive while 'living in community'...

btw, if you didn't notice the little sprout in the background of the picture above, zooming in on the image you can see that even a morning glory can grow on my deck without a pot (or soil) - clearly, living in isolation is an issue for purple basil at the bak home...
